Bestwood Estate entrance in Kathu at dusk

Project profile · Kathu

Bestwood Estate

A 200-hectare mixed-use settlement on the N14 at Kathu — housing, retail, community and institutional uses on about 1,700 stands.

The development

A town within a town.

Bestwood Estate (now marketed as Lattakoo Estate) was laid out on a 200-hectare portion of the farm Bestwood no 459 RD, next to the N14 on Kathu's southern side. It brings affordable and general housing together with retail, medical, recreation and institutional stands — the kind of mixed settlement a mining town needs if it is going to keep its people.

Built on hard ground

The site sits on solid calcrete rock. More than 100,000 m³ of it was blasted and crushed on site for roadworks and building — the kind of bulk earthworks that decides whether a development like this is ever going to work.

A working estate

Bestwood is fenced, serviced and occupied, with its own owners' association and an approved groundwater supply. That means the work that follows is maintenance, expansion and infill — not a greenfields dream.

Where RCT fits in

  • Bulk earthworks, site clearance, road and stand preparation for new phases and infill stands.
  • Water, sewerage and stormwater reticulation, pump stations and bulk service connections.
  • Building work — houses, shops, offices and community facilities — from substructure to handover.
  • Plant and engineering support: installations, plant hire, boilermaking and mechanical maintenance for estate services.
  • Project and cost management, quantity surveying and developer-side coordination for owners and investors.

Estate facts are taken from public project records: the project's SAHRA heritage notification and developer documentation, trade press reporting on the Bestwood/Lattakoo development, and the estate's own property owners' association material. Bestwood was initiated by Share Africa Housing with Katu Property Developers and the first civil works were carried out by Esorfranki — RCT is a contractor and development partner working in and around the estate, not its originator.
